What is Search Engine Marketing? Pay-Per-Click [PPC] advertising or Search engine marketing (SEM) is run by mayor search engines such as Google, Yahoo and MSN. When someone searches for particular key words, advertisements (“sponsored adds”) are placed along the search results or appear on the website you click to. These adverts appear in the right context and are related to the keywords of the search. You have probably seen such adverts from Google (e.g. on this page) and know that the adverts can be just what you were looking for, giving you valuable additional options. How to make money from Search Engine Marketing (SEM)? This type of advertising can either be used to make money from instant high quality traffic to your own web site, or if you don’t have a website, you can drive traffic directly to websites for which you act as an affiliate and earn commissions from resulting clicks, sales or leads. And what are the initial costs? – very little to nothing! How does SEM work? If you don’t own a website you need first to become an affiliate to one or more websites (merchants) that sell goods or services and pay you commission for driving traffic to their sites. To make this easier, you can join websites that act as exchanges and run large lists of online sellers that are interested in recruiting you as an affiliate. One of the best exchanges which specially caters for keyword marketing is TradeDoubler (for Europe wide search engine marketing):
Another large international affiliate network dealing in keyword advertising is commission junction and there are more. These will supply you with your personalized tracking codes linked to the merchant’s website for which you have been accepted as an affiliate. They also track the money you have earned. You use these codes in your adverts to link to the corresponding sites. You also need to join a network that provides PPC search engine marketing or keyword marketing. The biggest are: Google AdWords Overture Espotting Mirago You create an account with one of them (Google is the easiest and charges £5 for initial set up) and then create your "advertising campaign". There is plenty of help available on how to do this on Google’s website. Most important is that you carefully select relevant search keywords or phrases that you want to target. A search for these will then trigger the display of your advert. You determine how much you want to pay for that keyword per click on your advert. As you can imagine, the position the advert is placed when the keyword is searched depends on the amount you offer per click (but you only pay if someone has actually clicked your advert). The art is now to find keywords that drive relevant traffic to merchants with good products who pay good commissions and have a high sales rate per click. TradeDoubler have a dedicated "keyword report" that allows you to track the effectiveness of each keyword phrase you are bidding on. For example, if you sent 200 clicks at £0.50 a click on one keyword phrase to an advertiser, you will find the amount of commission those keywords have generated in your keyword report. If, for instant, you have generated 15 sales that were paying you a total of £200 in commission, these clicks on average have earned you £1.00 per click (£200 divided by 200 clocks), but each click only incurred a cost to you of £0.50 which means, you have made 100% profit from your advertising campaign! You can also use the keyword report to find which keywords perform best and use this to optimize your keywords. There are no other expenses, you pay only for clicks on your advert (you limit the total amount you are prepared to pay) - if your advert does not get any clicks then you do not incur any costs. However, if your clicks don’t convert into commissions you may have to pay for clicks without getting a return. So plan carefully and do your research – there is plenty of help available. If you play it right you can make good money!
